What is Buddhism?
Hello, I am Sasaki Gengo . Today I`d like to talk about what Buddhism is.
In India there is someone who is called Ryuju Bosatsu . He wrote a book called 「Jujubibasharon」.
He made quite short answers like Shoakumakusa , Shuzenbugyo , Jijougoi and Zeshobukyo to a question. Tell us what Buddhism is in a short statemant.
It means stop doing bad acts , do good acts and make mind pure for yourselves .
This is the teaching of Buddha . Someone says even one knows stop doing bad acts and do good acts . However it is hard to do it in reality even for an 80-years old man .
Therefore it is very important to stop doing bad acts and do good acts . To practice is important . Jujubibasharon states that it is Buddhism in his book .
Then what is doing bad acts ? In Buddhism , there are ten things called ten bad acts . They are followings ;
A :Singoh…Sin done by body
1:Sesshoh…killing living creatures
2:Chutoh…stealing something which doesn’t belong to you and isn’t given
3:Jyainn…having affairs with someone else who is not own spouse
B:Kugoh…Sin done by mouth
4:Mougo…lying with the truth hidden
5:Kigo…exaggerating and thanking not feeling appreciation
6:Akku…criticizing others
7:Ryozetsu…alienating others by exaggerating just good points to others
C:Igoh…Sin done by heart (mind)
8:Donyoku…having a greedy mind
9:Shinni…having an angry mind
10:Guchi…being foolish and ignorant / saying something which can’t be corrected
and there is no brightness
In our lives , the Evil which is composed of body , mouth and mind is called ten bad acts .
Stop doing bad acts and then do good acts . Then what is good acts ? Good acts , that is , are not to do bad acts .
When we talk about ten bad acts , we also mention ten good acts .
That is because the word “not” can be put in front of ten bad acts . not killing , not stealing , not having affair , not lying , ….These are ten good acts .
Good acts are stopping bad acts . That is the teaching of Buddha .Bad acts return for sure as a consequence .
In other words , the result of ten bad acts is falling into Hell . Hell means ceaseless pain that is Hell .
Then what about doing ten good acts . The consequence of it is going to Heaven to become a holy spirit . This is the consequence of ten good acts .
Jujubisharon says that a person who kills living creatures will die early and have many illnesses . And if he doesn’t kill living creatures , he will have a long life and few illnesses . Therfore stop ten bad acts for sure and try to do ten good acts .
Also , it is important to teach children to do good acts instead of bad acts . Here let’s think about what kind of person it is who believes Buddha .
For example , there is a saying , not to lie . It can mean just keep a promise . But it really means that if you always say your realmind and be honest , as a result of these acts you will not be conceived by others .That is important thing .
Rennyoshonin said that if you are person who with your heart , then you don’t lie . Then people can depend on you . No matter how luxurious and high-ranked person , you are no matter how much praise and ability you have in the society , if you are a person who doesn’t believe with your heart , then you can’t be relied on .
The person whom people can depend on heartily is the person who has the belief on Buddha . I agree with Rennyoshonin .
By the way , the teacher of Sinranshonin is Honenshonin . What Honenshonin said is that I am the Honen-bou the Guchi (10) with no wisdom which is the first-base from the bottom . Even though he is good enough to be called Honen-bou of preyer or Honen-bou of first wisdom . That’s because he is the person who spread only Namuamidabutsu .
In the book of 「Honen」, we can find that Honen-bou of ten bad acts and Honen-bou of Guchi which are about himself .
What can be inferred from this ? It meams when he reflected himself on the teaching Namuamidabutsu , he realized his reflection as Hounen-bou of ten bad acts and Hounen-bou of Guchi . Being reflected is important . That’s because if you are taught heartily , your reflection on Namuamidabutsu become Hounen-bou of ten bad acts and Honen-bou of Guchi . On the other hand , Shinranshonin said Hell is already organized , and it’s my residence .
Honenshonin said Honen-bou of ten bad acts and Honen-bou of Guchi and Shinranshonin said Hell is my residence .
What it means that it is the realization of oneself when he/she is reflected on the teaching and also means that these two people met themselves through prayers .
Again from the beginning , to stop doing bad acts is realizing real self and to do good acts is praying . Ryuju Bosatsu also lived through prayer with realizing for himself .
It is Esin-sange ( realizing the seriousness of sin and wake up ) How can he/she become a person who satisfies with only prayer ? Which is better for me ? It is important . It is listening to doctrine , that is listening to doctrine and listening to teaching .
To become one with Honenshonin and Shinranshonin whth same mind is listening to doctrine . It is listening to doctrine willingly . To become willingly is like sacrificing your life to seek nirvana . In addition , apply your seeking to reality .
For example , you have your own family . you might have a wife and children . Or you might be single . There are many situations , but you should not ignore the reality you face and don’t refuse . Just seek nirvana , dealing with the situations you have .
When you want to grow flowers , there are bugs . Taking your reality , as it is , is taking care of the flowers by removing bugs and watering them when needed . It is necessary to do these . Like this . you have to take care of your family and career . Dealing with the problem and keeping seeking until you realize are listening to doctrine .
My teacher said three things ; Monpoh ( listening to doctrine ) Gongyo ( being diligent ) and Nenbutsu ( praying ) . Listening to doctrine , being diligent , reading Wasan or Shosinge which is spread nowadays and practicing Namuamidabutsu and prayer are the ways to become a person like Honenshonin and Shinranshonin who recite through Shinjinnenbutsu and Shinjinketsujo .
The above has been excepted from the record of Dr. Sasaki Gengo speech which was presented at the 4th meeting in June 1 , 2003 .
